Preheat oven to 350. Prepare one box of cake mix. Mix in about 10 drops of red or pink food coloring. If you are doing red velvet or chocolate make the batter as normal and don’t add the food coloring.

Line 9×11 cake pan with parchment paper and pour in about 3/4 of the batter. Bake for about 20 minutes, then flip onto a cutting board to cool. The parchment paper should make it easy to get out of cake pan. Peel parchment paper off when cake is cooled.

Cut out hearts by either setting the template on top of the cooled cake and using a sharp knife to cut out the shapes, or use cookie cutter. Or freehand!

Prepare white cake mix according to directions. Line cupcake pan with liners and place one cut out heart in each one So that they are standing up, facing the same way so you know where to cut them to show the heart inside. Spoon white cake mix into each, making sure fill around the heart and cover the heart a bit on top. Bake for 23-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool and frost. I also added a conversation heart on top of each one and sprinkled with edible glitter, but you can also use sprinkles!

When you cut or bite into the cupcake you should reveal the hidden heart inside!
