Recipe: Cinnamon Vanilla French Toast With Oroweat®healthfull® Bread

When was the last time you feel in love with your bread?

I have had bread in my home constantly. Not only is it great for those countless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but also things like grilled cheese and my personal favorite – French Toast! Made with 100 percent whole grain flour, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, and just 80 calories, Oroweat®Healthfull® Bread is the healthy alternative to other breads. I was asked to take the Oroweat®Healthfull® challenge and change my bread for a week.

Day One: My son started to ask me about the bread. Because I got the Flax & Sunflower it had visible seeds, a far cry from the normal white bread he’s used to. Even though he was skeptical, he ate it.

Day Two: He decided he wanted a peanut butter and jelly, but this time with that “bread with the seeds in it”. hmmm…

The rest of the week it was more of the same – he liked the bread because it was bigger, softer, and tasted better than the bland white bread he was used to. Score one for the mommy.

Because he seemed to like it so much I got the Steel Cut Oats & Honey for a French Toast breakfast. Here’s my favorite way of making French Toast, now made better (and healthier!) with Oroweat®Healthfull®!

Cinnamon-Vanilla French Toast

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs (I LOVE farm fresh, if you can get your hands on some that would be ideal!)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbs heavy whipping cream
  • 8 slices of Oroweat Steel Cut Oats & Honey Healthfull Bread

Starting the night before:

Use a hand mixer or blender to blend all ingredients except for bread together. Whip until very frothy, about 7 minutes. Pour 1/2 of the mixture into a large shallow glass pan (you may need two of these!). Line bread in a singles along the pans not overlapping. pour remaining mixture on top to cover bread completely. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator overnight.

In the morning you will see that the bread has soaked up almost all of the egg mixture. Pre-heat oven to 350. Carefully remove slices with a spatula and place on a large cookie sheet. Bake in oven for about ten minutes. While baking, heat up a griddle or skillet on medium-high. When you remove the French Toast from the oven place on buttered griddle for 2 minutes on each side. Serve hot with a pat of butter and your favorite syrup or whipped cream and your favorite fruit. Serves 4

Preparing the mixture overnight makes the inside custardy and smooth and the outside crisp. These are SO good!!

Another favorite of mine is Grilled Cheese. I use muenster cheese and cheddar. Butter your favorite Oroweat Healthfull bread on one side, make the sandwich, and grill on medium-high until both sides are crisp. Serve with your favorite tomato soup for a delicious, comforting and healthy meal!
