My husband came home the other day and walked right into a usual stressful moment for me. I was just getting the kids ready for bed – Riley was in a towel, fresh from a bath, and Dylan was giving me a rough time about his own bath (he didn’t want to, I insisted). It was a little tornado happening in the bathroom. He saw the stress in my eyes. He saw our daughter getting anxious and just wanting to finish her bedtime routine. He took control, getting her into pajamas and blow-drying her hair while I felt the wave of stress start to melt away as I reasoned with D on his bath-strike. But I was still holding onto my little tornado.

I realized I wasn’t following my own advice on de-stressing, hence this post. I want to remind myself – and you – that little things can help a HUGE amount.

5 Ways To De-Stress At The End Of The Day

5 Ways To De-stress At The End Of The Day

1. Don’t snack on junk.

Often something you want to do is have the forbidden foods – the ones you so carefully hide from your kids, like chocolate, cookies, or chips. You tell yourself that it’s because you don’t want them to have unhealthy snacks, but why are you having them? All processed foods will do is stimulate you enough to where you can’t wind down. Instead reach for something healthy, like freshly cut red bell pepper (my favorite!), a small bowl of strawberries, or a banana. But the best thing? Nothing at all 2 hours before you go to bed.

2. Take your vitamins.

Taking your vitamins will help with that urge to snack before bed, since your body isn’t craving as much. My favorites are . I love how they don’t have added *stuff* and dissolve instead of being swallowed. This is not only easier for you to take but also absorbed by your body that much quicker. My personal choices are:

  • Vitamin B-12 Energy Burst
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • CoQ10
  • Vitamin K

3. Unplug It All!

Studies show that using a device or watching television up to an hour before bedtime will only hurt your chances of restful sleep. Try turning off your devices and read a book or magazine instead.

4. Get some sleep.

Easier said than done, right? When you are a bundle of nerves, it only hurts your sleep pattern. You can try Superior Source Vitamins Melatonin, this is what I use when I can’t calm my mind down. It works just long enough to lull me into a soft sleep and I am good until morning.

5. Talk (or write) about it.

To me, nothing helps more than getting it all out in the open. Let the problems of the day be acknowledged so that you can move on! Either talk about it with your partner or keep a journal, but don’t hold onto those problems.

After the evening calmed down and the kids got to bed, I sat down with my husband and talked about my day and how he walks in and “sees me at my worst”, which he understood completely. I also made sure he knew that taking immediate action to help would not only make my life a little easier, it would set the tone for the rest of the evening and we could enjoy it. It helps.
