They say Portland has some of the best food in the United States. While some may think they are limited to the downtown restaurants, there is one on the northeast edge of Portland (near the airport) that is worth the extra drive – RingSide Grill at 14021 NE Glisan St. Portland, Oregon.  Nestled away from the busy streets of downtown Portland, RingSide Grill gives a relaxed atmosphere with the fine food experience you might find at some of the major players downtown. I was invited to sample some of the chef’s favorites with my family (yes, they are child-friendly) and share my experiences. Our server Brian was perfect in explaining the dishes, making recommendations, and fully accommodating.

We started off with a RingSide Grill staple – the onion rings, served with a special house dipping sauce. The fact that the onion rings were lightly battered and didn’t fall apart when bitten into was definitely a positive start to our experience. The sauce had a subtle spice to it that seemed to be a common thread throughout our meal.

Next up was a Margherita Flatbread topped with fresh basil and house-made mozzarella. I have made mozzarella before and I know that there is a finesse to it that can be noted in the taste and texture – this flatbread definitely had a pure freshness to it, mostly in due to the mozzarella. Along with the flatbread came a House Made Deviled Egg shareable appetizer. The eggs were topped with a slice of smoked sausage and thin slice of jalepeno chili that contrasted with the smooth yolk filling nicely.

My favorite of the evening was the Herb-Crusted Petrale Sole. This filet was baked in a garlic-butter sauce and stuffed with an impeccable shrimp mousse. Complimenting the sole were fingerling potatoes. I asked our server Brian about the cooking process – the potatoes are rotisseried with the Draper Valley Chicken to soak in the essence of the chicken juices and seasonings, a technique I hadn’t considered in my own cooking. The sole was in a word buttery. It practically melted in my mouth and was the highlight of my meal.

The bone-in rib eye is to die for… #ringsidegrill #pdx #foodie

My husband’s favorite was next – the Bone-In Ribeye Steak. This steak weighs in at a massive 20oz, definitely more than ample. He asked for it to be medium-rare and it came out cooked perfectly. The seasonings were not too overpowering. The steak cut smoothly and was very juicy.

And the dessert – lemon torte with candied grapefruit. Amazing… #ringsidegrill #foodie #dessert

Finally, the final course was dessert, where we were served a Lemon Tart with a meringue disc and candied grapefruit rinds. I am not usually a citrus person – and definitely not a citrus dessert person, but this Lemon Tart changed my tune. I loved the artisan look of the dish and the meringue disc on top. I wasn’t sure how to eat it – do I pick the disc up? Do I break it apart? I ended up tapping it with my spoon because I wanted to get some meringue, lemon, and crumb crust in each bite, ultimately the best decision.

My drink of the evening was recommended by Brian – a 5 Spice Lemondrop. I have had lemondrops before and have usually been happy with them, but this was different. It wasn’t too sweet and the spices lent a great addition to the drink. It consisted of spice-infused vodka, St. Germain, lemon, habanero, and 5 spices. Like I mentioned earlier, the note of spice was a common thread through the entire dinner experience, and this 5-Spice Lemondrop was a perfect catalyst for the theme.
