So I know many of my readers have young children. And in this day and age our children love electronics. My kids’ favorite item? Their iPad Tablet. Seriously, these kids are barely three years old and know their way around an iPad better than most adults! But one thing they cannot do is plug in passwords so my accounts are safe from toddler purchases.

AT&T has this fantastic feature for the new Windows HTC phone – Kid’s Corner! Kid’s Corner allows you to put the phone in child mode – your child can only access certain apps, videos, and music that you want them to. That way they are not getting into your content, rearranging your calendar (yes, that has happened), or seeing something they aren’t supposed to see on the world wide web.

AT&T sent me a Windows HTC phone to test the Kid’s Corner feature with the twins. Side note – I have to admit, I have been an iPhone user for a long, long time, so I was worried that I wouldn’t “get” the Windows HTC phone. To my surprise, it was easy to navigate, easy to load apps, and super easy to access everything – it is like having my laptop in one little mobile device!

Kid’s Corner is just one of the several safety tools that allow parents and children to help manage their mobile device experience, from who they connect with to the type of content that can be accessed.  In addition to Kid’s Corner, here are a few more:

  • ·         AT&T Smart Limits for Wireless helps families manage the types of purchases made from the mobile device, texting and data usage, and time-of-day use restrictions.
  • ·         Purchase Blocker is a free tool from AT&T that helps families manage mobile bills by blocking premium content purchases like games and apps that are direct-billed to individuals’ AT&T accounts.
  • ·         AT&T Family Map helps parents by allowing them to locate their children’s mobile device on a map.

While Kids Corner is a feature that is exclusive to Windows 8 Phones, Purchase Blocker, AT&T FamilyMap and AT&T Smart Limits for Wireless may be used on virtually all devices (iPhone, Android, Windows, etc.).  More information about Family Map, Purchase Blocker, Smart Limits for Wireless and more may be found by clicking here.

I set up my Hotmail account to download apps for the kids and they were off and running. One really nice thing about the apps you can download? You can try them before you buy them. So no spending $1 or more on an app that you *think* you or the kids might like – you can try it out and then make the decision to purchase. How nice it that!! So I downloaded some Toy Story apps for the kiddos along with a few other child-friendly games and puzzles. The kids LOVED them. I loved how easy it was for them to see the games on one screen. I also loved that my two little darlings couldn’t screw around with the rest of the phone. Win-win!

Kid’s Corner was easy to set up, easy to access, and easy for Dylan & Riley to play with. If you have a Windows phone try it – your non-rearranged calendar will thank you for it 🙂
