My Visit to Disney's Creative Campus: Maleficent Merchandise! #MaleficentEvent
I was so incredibly lucky to be able to visit the Disney’s Creative Campus in Glendale, CA during my press trip! I met with Jonathan Symington (Vice President & General Manager, Licensing, Disney Entertainment and Games) and Ariella Seltzer (Associate Designer, Disney Store North America) to see all about the products that have been created for the film Maleficent.
The campus is, well, amazing. It expands well over 125 acres and is minutes away from Disneyland and right across the street from DisneyToons Studios (where Planes Fire & Rescue was made!). This place is MASSIVE. It has it’s own Starbucks, a day care center, and a library FULL of any and every Disney book or publication imaginable.
The center court was awesome. There’s a huge fountain called Deconstructed Mickey and it is full of benches tables and chairs. While I was there I saw several animators and designers just sitting out there drawing or having meetings. Can you imagine if your office was a park?
Throughout the campus are several bigger-than-life statues, designed for the Disney Infinity characters. One of my favorites was Sully!
In the product presentation room Ariella Seltzer discussed her design process in detail. She started with looking at the actual costumes from the film Maleficent and then went from there, finding fabrics and textiles, submitting sketches, having prototypes made, and tweaking & adjusting until the final product was what she envisioned as well as stayed within a price budget. Her Aurora costume went through several changes with trims and little details and came out beautifully.
Jonathan Symington discussed the other products around the movie, including Stella McCartney’s Children’s Collection and the David Lerner Collection. I kind of fell for the black lizard-embossed dress – so gorgeous!
It’s amazing how much goes into the product presentation and line! There’s so much involved with juggling the lines and where they can be purchased. I got a few awesome things myself, like my now-favorite Maleficent mug and journal.
Be sure to check out Maleficent merchandise at Disney Store, Target, and several other retailers! Click HERE for a full product line and where to buy!
