Married at First Sight is an extreme social experiment following six brave souls who are yearning for a life-long partnership as they agree to a provocative proposal: getting legally married the moment they first meet. Four specialists- a sexologist, spiritualist, psychologist, and sociologist- will create what they believe are three perfect couples, based on scientific matchmaking. The couples will never meet or know each other until they walk down the aisle and see each other face to face, for the first time, when they get married. Each episode of “Married at First Sight” will follow the classic lifestyle stories of newlyweds- from the honeymoon to early nesting to other relatable events of married life. After several weeks together, each couple must make a decision: do they remain together or decide to separate?
Did you know your partner was “the one” the moment you met him or her? Me? ummm… kinda? Actually not really…
When I met my husband I was 19, he was 21. We were both living in Orange County California and happened to be in the same place at the same time – The Palace Nightclub in downtown Hollywood.
I was there with a couple of friends dancing to 90’s songs from bands like Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails. I noticed him earlier in the evening drinking a beer and standing along the back wall with a few guy friends. The first thing I noticed were his eyes. They were as blue as the building we were in.
An hour or so went by, we kept passing each other in the club, made eye contact, but wouldn’t approach. I am the type of person that expects the guy to make the first move, so I was getting a bit annoyed. Finally I gave up.
It was around midnight when I went back to the dance floor and forgot about him. I wasn’t paying attention when I felt someone come up in front of me and start dancing.
“Hey! I’m Josh!”
…I know what you are thinking. “He finally made a move!”.. nope.
The guy who joined me on the dance floor was not the one who had been eyeing me all night. It was some *other* Josh. I will affectionately call him “Douchebag Josh”.
Douchebag Josh tried to put his arm around me and pull me closer. Ugh. I was running through my head how to get away when I saw Blue Eyes again. I mentally pleaded with him to come save me from Douchebag Josh. And he got it. As DB Josh looked away to say something to a friend Blue Eyes swooped in and grabbed my hand. FINALLY! To make the whole transaction even more interesting? His name is also Josh!
We danced, chatted, and then headed to Denny’s after the club closed at 2am. I didn’t realize that he was “the one” until about 4 months later when my mom told me he was the man I would marry. I scoffed then thought.. “well, maybe…”
Maybe was right, because 5 years later were were married in Lake Tahoe, NV. That was 15 years ago….
So have you seen the commercials for the new FYI show Married at First Sight? It’s pretty interesting, I am totally compelled to watch it. Premieres on the NEW FYI Network July 8th, so watch for it!
