Ahh, Garage Sale Season! I absolutely LOVE driving around on a Friday morning searching for scores. I was especially excited last week to come across a neighborhood sale and found a coffee table for just $5!
Ok, so it wasn’t the BEST looking table, but it had great bones. The finish on the top was damaged, probably some sort of nail polish remover. And I am not big on lighter wood, I prefer dark wood or black. It was very dusty and dirty and a few dings, but I grabbed it and pushed it into the back of my Land Rover. It barely fit 🙂
I got it home and decided I would paint it black, but leave the drawers dark brown (I like that contrast!) The drawers were all wicker and in good shape! Just needed a good cleaning!
First I cleaned the dust and grime off, then sanded it down a bit, along with wiping it all down with a wet rag to get the dust off. Then I grabbed a small can of black paint and a $.39 sponge brush and got to work. The paint was from a project in my laundry room – I had painted it Tiffany blue with a black stripe around the top of the walls. So I had a lot left of that 1 quart can.
I painted 3 thin coats of the black paint and let it dry. Thinner coats are so much better than thicker coats – you will get a smoother finish and no drippy bits. I could have coated it with a polyurethane spray but, really? I didn’t have any so I skipped it 🙂 I cleaned the drawers with a damp rag, then sprayed and wiped with Seventh Generation Wood Cleaner (Pledge works too!)
