Birchbox Review – Hits & Misses In the December 2017 Subscription Box

Being a bit of a subscription box addict (especially beauty boxes!), I had a lot of people tell me I needed to try Birchbox. For those of you who don’t know what Birchbox is, it’s a way to try some pricy beauty products – makeup, skincare, and haircare. Subscribing is $10 shipped making it one of the less expensive beauty boxes out there. But is it worth it? I tried the December box (January is coming to me next week)…
I received 6 items in the box:
- Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
- Stila Cosmetics HUGE™ Extreme Lash Mascara
- Bioderma® Sensibio H2O Make-Up Removing Micelle Solution
- Sand & Sky Brilliant Skin™ Purifying Pink Clay Mask
- Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Pearl Primer
- Birchbox Brand Eyelash Curler
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
This paraben- and sulfate-free detangler seals the cuticles of each strand to smooth hair and moisturize, which helps minimize frizz. It also provides protection against UV rays and heat, safeguards color, and adds shine. Happily, it accomplishes all this through a weightless, non-greasy formula that leaves behind an airy floral scent. Plus, it’s 100 percent vegan and suitable for all hair types.
! tried it on my daughter who tends to have fairly tangled hair after a bath. It smells like something that I can’t quite put my finger on (it’s very light and pleasant). Kind of like a vanilla bean mixed with maybe a cherry blossom. The bottle doesn’t have a size on it, I am guessing it’s around .75 fl oz. An 8oz bottle is $23.50 and I would consider purchasing this. This product looks like it’s only available at Birchbox.
Stila Cosmetics HUGE™ Extreme Lash Mascara
For a super bold look that renders faux lashes obsolete, this ink-like mascara is the one to swipe on. Intense color and flexible waxes let you go big in every way—just one coat gives you a major boost in volume, curl, and length. The conditioning, lightweight formula is smudge-proof and clump-proof, resulting in glossy and soft lashes coat after coat.
I always seem to have a hard time finding a mascara I love. It’s usually the wand that’s the dealbreaker. I do LOVE this wand – it’s fluffy and contoured and coats my lashes like a dream. My usual go-to is Urban Decay Perversion and this may just replace it. The sample is .2oz and you can get a full tube (.44oz) for $23.
Bioderma® Sensibio H2O Make-Up Removing Micelle Solution
We’ll be the first to admit we have days we’re just too tired to wash our face at the end of the night. That’s where this easy-to-use, no-rinse facial cleanser and makeup remover steps in to simplify things. It’s specifically designed for sensitive to normal and dry skin types. With cucumber extract and soothing properties for fully nourished, healthy skin, this fragrance-free formula removes even the most stubborn, water-resistant makeup to leave you feeling fresh day and night.
I have used micellar water for makeup removal before, this one was nice but I didn’t noticed much of a difference between it and a cheaper brand (Garnier Micellar Water is $6.99 for a 13.5fl oz). This will run you $14.90 for a 500ml bottle (roughly 17fl oz). I will probably just stick to my less expensive brand.
Sand & Sky Brilliant Skin™ Purifying Pink Clay Mask
A mask that clarifies, invigorates, refines texture, and brightens? Sounds brilliant. This pretty pink formula is rich in numerous botanicals native to Australia—including pink clay, licorice, aloe vera, and pomegranate, plus mangosteen and Kakadu plum and kelp—that deliver all those results in just 10 minutes. Slather it on as a little pre-nocturnal indulgence or before makeup to prep your skin—pores are clear and happy and your complexion truly looks more radiant. So long blackheads!
The good on this – the product is ahhhh-mazing. I am shocked at how soft and smooth my skin feels after trying it out. Definitely one of the best masks I have tried in a long time (and I try a lot of masks). The $49 for 1.96 oz? It’s kind of a lot of dough to plunk down.
Now the bad…
The tube was only about ⅓ full which was a complete bummer. When I first picked it up out of the box I thought “wow, this feels light”. I then decided to squeeze it down until I saw product in the opening…
This says it’s .47oz but it’s more like .2oz. I was able to eek out one application to try and that was just barely.
Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Pearl Primer
Oil-free, smoothing, and long-wearing—this primer has everything you love about the original The POREfessional Face Primer with added glow factor. Because who doesn’t want to blur the look of pores and brighten at the same time? The pearly-pink color adds a soft-matte radiance to your complexion (great for oily skin types that still want to look luminous) while priming for makeup application that lasts. You can even touch up midday by applying over your foundation or do without color altogether to achieve a natural no-makeup makeup look.
I generally use a pearl primer (L’Oreal LUMI primer has been my go-to lately). I love the way my skin glows under my foundation. I tried the Benefit version and it’s not as highlighting as LUMI, but is does a better job of making my skin more “soft focused” than other primers. The consistency reminds me a ton of Smashbox Photo Primer, but it’s a tad stickier so my foundation has something to grab on to. The tube is teeny tiny (.1oz), but there are a few applications because a little goes a long way! $31 for a .75oz tube which would last a while.
Birchbox Brand Eyelash Curler
I couldn’t find any info on this bonus product on the Birchbox site, only on the little card that came with my box, stating that the curler is $13. It feels like it’s the right price in my mind – comparing it to the Sephora brand lash curler it’s $3 cheaper.
The curler cushion is really soft – like super soft. I used the curler this morning and after compressing my lashes for about 10 seconds on each eye they were curled to the heavens. It’s easy and comfortable.
Despite my disappointment in the amount of product in Sand & Sky, I am overall pleased with it this box. I would say it’s worth the $10 I spent.
